Although a very useful tool for online businesses, pay-per-click or PPC for short, is an advertising medium which is not used as much as it probably should be by those new to web advertising. In short PPC advertising involves search engines, websites and advertising networks which receive payment from you only when the ad you’ve submitted for placement is clicked. Advertisers don’t make an initial payment for they’re ad to be placed which makes PPC very enticing. You’re literally only paying for results. The most favored kind of PPC and the type I’ll be focusing on is via search engines. In order of popularity would be: Google AdWords, Yahoo search advertising and Microsoft AdCenter.
DECIDE YOUR BUDGET
If you’ve decided to give PPC and try and there’s few reasons why anyone with a website wouldn’t then it should come as no surprise that your first responsibility has to do with cash.
More specifically you need to decide how much you want to or can spend on your campaign per month. The great thing about search engine pay-per-click is there really is no right amount as it can technically be anywhere between zero and much more, depending on your particular budget. If your just starting out and want to test the waters it’s perfectly acceptable to set a monthly budget just to see what amount of hit’s you get. Of course you won’t be getting much but you’ll end up increasing that number accordingly. Search engine PPC generally involves a bidding system for determining what position your ad shows up although ad quality plays a part. The advertiser with the largest bid will usually have their ad in the first and most visible spot. Usually there is a small account activation fee of – depending on which search engine you’ll be using unless there’s a current promotion in which they waive the fee.
KEYWORDS
Next you will have to decide on what keywords your planning on using.
This won’t be hard if you already spent time optimizing your site for search engines because one of your tasks would have involved deciding on your keywords. Google’s AdWord keyword tool is very helpful for this purpose. Try to avoid one word generic terms. It’s best to find unique keywords that someone searching for your product would actually use.
CREATING YOUR AD
An ad will usually consist of a title followed by a description usually no longer than a short sentence, followed by your website url. Of course this is where you get your chance to be creative and make something that hopefully sets you apart from the other advertisers competing for clicks and sales. “Know thy enemy” might seem a little over-dramatic in this instance but you really should spend some time looking at the ads you’ll be going up against. Of course you shouldn’t copy anyone’s text exactly but hopefully you’ll be inspired to create something that show’s the unique qualities of your site which makes it better than the rest. As a general rule capitalize the first letter of each word in your title and include any special offers in your description and remember to make multiple ads. You can end up going with the most successful one eventually.
In short PPC advertising is a very useful and potentially low cost form of advertising. Of course, in the end only you can decide if it’s right for your site. Maybe you’ll end up wanting to focus mainly on SEO optimization but if you’ve never tried PPC advertising and your serious about getting more targeted traffic to your site it’s definitely worth a look.
